Global Studio Japan Experience
My Global Studio Japan trip was an immersive 10-day experience exploring the cultural and artistic landscapes of Tokyo, Yokosuka, and Shimoda. This study abroad opportunity allowed me to engage firsthand with Japan’s rich history, design aesthetics, and everyday life. From the vibrant streets of Tokyo to the coastal beauty of Shimoda, each location provided a unique perspective on tradition and modernity. Throughout the trip, we exchanged gifts with our friends in Japan, reinforcing the deep sense of connection and cultural appreciation that defined our journey.
A highlight of the experience was the chance to present our work during the Bristol, RI Black Ships Festival, an event that celebrates the historic relationship between Japan and the United States. In addition to sharing my design work, I had the opportunity to perform a dance in Shimoda, Japan, for an audience of about 60 people—the largest crowd I had danced in front of alone at that moment. Inspired by that experience, I created Dancing Through Language Barriers, a series of buttons capturing different poses from my performance. Each pose was chosen to represent unity, showing how movement and expression can transcend linguistic and cultural divides. This project was a reflection of movement, culture, and connection, tying together my passion for art and storytelling in a deeply personal way. This trip not only expanded my artistic and cultural awareness but also deepened my appreciation for global storytelling and collaboration, inspiring me to continue creating work that bridges cultures and fosters meaningful dialogue.
