As a Black designer, I am deeply inspired by the work of Black creatives who use design as a tool for advocacy, empowerment, and change. For my Advanced Typography project, I reworked and restructured information from Black In Design, a group dedicated to uplifting Black voices in the design industry. Through bold typography and carefully curated imagery from their site, I created a visually compelling publication that not only highlights their mission but also celebrates the impact of Black designers in the field.
The final page of my publication pays homage to three Black creatives who inspire me: Lo Harris, whose vibrant illustrations bring joy and activism together; Joshua Darden, the creator of one of the few free fonts by a Black designer and the typeface used throughout my project; and myself, Sherisa Smith, a new and upcoming designer ready to make a lasting impact through work that merges social justice and design.
This project is a testament to the power of typography, representation, and storytelling. It reflects my passion for design as a means of advocacy and my commitment to amplifying Black voices in the creative industry.
